Cosmic Rays

When stars explode they throw out some particles at high speed. These travel through space as cosmic rays. Their speeds are truly phenomenal -- over half the speed of light.

When these particles hit the Earth's atmosphere they are called primary cosmic rays. 85% of these are protons, 12% alpha particles and the rest are electrons heavy nuclei.

These collide with the air to create neutrinos.
