The largest group of fruiting plants is the dicotyledons. Most common garden plants, shrubs and trees, and broad-leafed flowering plants -- such as magnolias, roses, geraniums, and hollyhocks -- are dicotyledons, so called because they have two seed leaves, or cotyledons, in the embryo contained in the seed. Contrast this with the other group of fruiting plants - the monocotyledons.
They typically have broad leaves containing a network of veins. Their roots usually have a tap root. They are generally woody plants.
