Greek inventions 2.5 kya

Iron using people invaded Greece about 3000 years ago and established city states on the coast. By about 2500 years ago the Greeks had taken the earlier Phoenician alphabet and perfected it by adding letters for all vowels, invented money and many other useful and interesting ideas.

Earlier Phoenician alphabet later perfected by Greeks

For example the Greeks debated whether the Earth goes round the Sun or the Sun goes round the Earth. Unfortunately most of them did not test any of their ideas by doing experiments. Instead they chose what they thought should happen, with the result that they often came to the wrong answer. For example they decided that the Sun went round the Earth.

The Greeks also invented the idea of a democracy, meaning rule by the people. All the men in a city had a vote to choose rulers and make laws, but women and slaves did not take part. Around 2300 years ago the Macedonians, led by Alexander, created a Greek empire stretching from Macedonia to India.
