New sources of energy, new materials, new ways of making and doing things, all grew at a breathtaking speed. Photography, the chemical industry, antiseptics, immunization, many new drugs, immunization and canning of food, ocean-going steam ships and steam railways, all these and more led to better food, health, transport and standard of living and to the population explosion.
