Nitrogen molecules

Nitrogen molecules, which make up most of the Earth's atmosphere, consist of two atoms of nitrogen linked by three covalent bonds. These three bonds are very strong, making it quite difficult to split the molecule into separate atoms.

Unfortunately for living things, nitrogen is an essential part of proteins. Most living things cannot split nitrogen molecules into atoms. Luckily there are some bacteria which can do this.
